Overview
This page describes many of the Java resources used in CS100M. Here are answers to some common questions we get asked:

• Do I need to buy Java? No. Use the public labs or download Java SDK (see Alternatives, below).
• Do I need to use CodeWarrior to get Java? No. But, CodeWarrior is the official development environment for CS100M.
• Do I need to buy CodeWarrior? No. You may use the public labs.
• Can I run/use Java without CodeWarrior? Yes. CodeWarrior is really an integrated development environment (IDE), which is a software package that helps you design and manage programs. Technically, you do not need an IDE to program, but it makes your life a lot easier, especially in debugging code.
• So, what happens without an IDE? You need to obtain a text editor to create your programs and a Java compiler to run them. See Java SDK in Alternatives, below.
• Which version of Java? Generally, 1.2.2, though we might try to shift to 1.3 if the public labs have it.

Which Version?

The public labs have CodeWarrior version 5.x installed, but the Campus Bookstore is probably selling version 6.y. We do not expect to depend on any features specific to either version, but note that although the .java file formats should be identical or at least compatible, the Project file formats are almost certainly not backwards compatible. If you wish to switch between the two versions,

• Create 2 separate Projects, one for each version of CodeWarrior.
• Add the same .java files to both projects.

Your own computer

• Where do you buy CW? You may purchase copies of CodeWarrior for personal machines at a substantial educational discount from the Campus Store,
• MetroWerks, and other software outlets.
• How do you install CW? Select one of the following links:
• Installing CodeWarrior Java on a Macintosh
• Installing CodeWarrior Java on a PC

CUCS Stationery

• Stationery (spelled with an "e", like "papEr") provides a template on which you can program.
• CS100M provides customized stationery called Cornell University Computer Science (CUCS) stationery.
• The public machines already have CUCS stationery installed.
• If you followed the steps in installing CodeWarrior, you would have downloaded the necessary files.
• If you didn't install the CUCS stationery, the links below have the necessary files:
• File to download for the PC
• File to download for the Mac
• FTP site for these files
• Read and follow the README files which give directions on storing the two projects into your CodeWarrior IDE (Interactive Development Environment) so you can use this stationery.

SDK:

• Java Software Development Kit: Free! Download directly from Sun. We might focus on 1.2.2, but you are welcome to try 1.3.

CUCS

• If you wish to download and use specific CUCS stationery, you can download the following files:
• Input/Output: TokenReader.java
• Formatting Output: Format.java
• Rudimentary Graphics: CUCSGraphicsApplication.java
• Downloading the individual files does not install CUCS Stationery in CodeWarrior.These files are bit out of date. We're in the process of upgrading them.
