Basic Wayback Machine Review

Step 4
| index | next

Step 4. The Wayback now shows the snapshot for the given date. You can click links on the snapshot page and the Wayback will take you to a snapshot of that page from a similar date.

Note the format of the URL of this page. The long number represents a timestamp of the format YYYYMMDDHHMMSS. The Wayback sometimes jumps from time to time as you navigate through pages, so be sure to go by this timestamp. Other problems that may occur include images that are broken or gray. This indicates the Internet Archive does not have a copy of the image. If you get an error that indicates a robots.txt exclusion, that indicates that indexing of the page has been blocked by the page owner.

The Wayback Machine is a crude but extremely powerful tool. For more, check out the presentation on the Wayback Machine on the Resources section of this site.
