"The world is greatly concerned with the problem of terrorism as a consequence of September 11. Internationally, the majority of the governments are in agreement that there is an urgent need for joint efforts to combat terrorism, and a series of measures have been adopted."
"Unfortunately, the present measures lack a long-term and comprehensive
approach to deal with the root causes of terrorism. What is required is a
well-thought-out, long-term strategy to promote globally a political culture of
non-violence and dialogue. The international community must assume a
responsibility to give strong and effective support to non-violent movements
committed to peaceful changes. Otherwise, it will be seen as hypocrisy to
condemn and combat those who have risen in anger and despair but to continue to
ignore those who have consistently espoused restraint and dialogue as a
constructive alternative to violence."
Statement
of His Holiness The Dalai Lama on 10 March 2002 on the 43rd Anniversary of The
Tibetan National Uprising Day
"[An] important factor is your
determination. You should not imagine that all these developments can take place
within a few days or a few years; they may even take several eons, so
determination is evidently vital. If you consider yourself a Buddhist and want
to really practice Buddha Dharma, then right from the start you must make up
your mind to do so until the end, regardless of whether it takes millions or
billions of eons. After all, what is the meaning of our life? In itself, there
is no intrinsic meaning. However, if we use life in a positive way, then even
the days and the months and the eons can become meaningful. On the other hand,
if you just fritter your life away aimlessly then even one day feels too long.
You will find that once you have a firm determination and a clear objective,
then time is not important."
--The
Dalai Lama's Book of Awakening
"I have for many years now engaged in interfaith dialogue
and understanding with the basic belief that all the major religions of the
world have the same potential to transform people into better human beings. The
common messages of love, kindness, tolerance, self-discipline and a sense of
sharing are in some ways the foundation for respecting the fundamental and basic
human rights of every person. The world religions can therefore contribute to
peace, harmony and human dignity. That is why understanding and good relations
amongst the different religious traditions of the world are so important...
Letter of support to
The Interfaith Call
"Science and technology, though capable of creating immeasurable
material comfort, cannot replace the age-old spiritual and humanitarian values
that have largely shaped world civilization, in all its national forms, as we
know it today. No one can deny the unprecedented material benefit of science and
technology, but our basic human problems remain; we are still faced with the
same, if not more, suffering, fear, and tension. Thus it is only logical to try
to strike a balance between material development on the one hand and the
development of spiritual, human values on the other. In order to bring about
this great adjustment, we need to revive our humanitarian values."
A Human Approach
to World Peace
"Because we all share this small planet earth, we have to learn to live
in harmony and peace with each other and with nature. That is not just a dream,
but a necessity. We are dependent on each other in so many ways, that we can no
longer live in isolated communities and ignore what is happening outside those
communities, and we must share the good fortune that we enjoy."
