Academic Excellence Workshops
The Academic Excellence Workshops (AEWs) are optional 1-credit S/U courses open to all students (not just those in Engineering) that offer an opportunity to gain additional experience with CS1110 material in a cooperative, small-group, active-learning environment. "Designed to enhance student understanding, the workshops are facilitated by undergraduate peer educators... AEWs are based on research showing that cooperative methods (as opposed to an individual, competitive approach to learning) promote higher grades, greater persistence, deeper comprehension, more enjoyment in learning, and more positive attitudes toward academic work".
AEWs are not remedial. The material studied in the workshop is at or above the level of the regular course. A study in a previous semester showed that, for courses where an AEW was offered, students taking the AEW averaged a .3 higher grade level (e.g., B to B+ or B+ to A-) than those who didn't, even though the average AEW-student's SAT score was lower.
To enroll, look for ENGRG 1010, Cooperative Workshop for CS 1110, in Student Center. Also check for it in the course roster, since if the course is full, the course description often includes a survey for requesting additional sections. Here is the Spring 2018 ENGRG 1010 roster entry.
