Éva Tardos, the Jacob Gould Schurman Professor of Computer Science and department chair in the Cornell Ann S. Bowers College of Computing and Information Science, has been awarded the Brouwer Medal Award by the Netherlands Mathematical Congress (NMC) for her enduring contributions to the field of discrete mathematics.
In selecting Tardos, the NMC – the main congress of the Royal Dutch Mathematical Society – cited her influential work in combinatorial optimization, approximation algorithms, and algorithmic game theory.
“We are impressed by the many contributions that Éva Tardos has made throughout her career, as a leading researcher shaping the research fields that she is active in,” the NMC jury wrote in their announcement. The award is named after Luitzen Egbertus Jan Brouwer, a Dutch mathematician and philosopher who is considered one of the great mathematical minds of the 20th century. “Her results have also impacted a broad range of application fields, ranging from operations research to network analysis.”
The jury also commended her skills and efforts in being a role model and mentor to a new generation of researchers.
As part of the award, Tardos will present a talk at the NMC’s Scientific Days conference on April 12.
