Effective 1 March 2008, the following guidelines are in force concerning liberal studies courses.

  1. Engineering students are urged to enroll in courses identified as fulfilling the liberal studies categories in the current CU Courses of Study. This website gives these courses, using the online CoS on the date given on the home page.
  2. The College of Engineering will not entertain petitions to use A&S or CALS courses that are not so marked in the CoS. If you want an A&S or CALS course to be added to a liberal studies category, you have to ask A&S or CALS to do this. However, neither A&S nor CALS has a process for students to petition to add a course. Only instructors can request to add a course to a category, and such requests are not handled often --perhaps most once a semester.
  3. Exception to point 2: Any Foreign Language course (not a literature course) petitioned will be approved for the FL category. Petitions for studio art courses and for performances courses in music or theater will be approved for the LA category.
  4. Students may petition to have courses outside CALS and A&S included in a liberal studies category, subject to the following: Petitions for courses already on the denied list (pdf file) will not be entertained. Courses on the already-approved list (pdf file) will be automatically approved. Submit petitions to Engineering Advising, in 167 Olin Hall.
