Why MATLAB?
Both CS100J and CS100M use MATLAB (http://www.mathworks.com),
which is:
-
a high level software package designed for numerical analysis.
-
used extensively in industry.
-
used extensively throughout Cornell in Engineering,
Computer
Science, and other disciplines.
Which Version?
The public labs have Matlab version 5.x installed,
but the Campus Bookstore is probably selling version 6.y.
We do not expect to depend on any features specific to either version.
The file formats should be mutually compatible,
i.e. the same files should automatically (without you needing to do anything)
work fine in both versions.

How to Access?
To access MATLAB, please note the following:
- There should be no need for a password this semester, but if there is:
-
The CS100 instructors will give you a user name and password
which are identical for all students in the class.
-
Do not give this password to others.
-
If you forget the password, you must see a CS100 instructor.
-
You can purchase a personal copy of the Student Edition of
MATLAB at the Campus Store or other bookstores. As noted above, the version sold is probably not the same version installed on the public labs, but the differences should not matter much.
-
Look here
for a list of public sites that support MATLAB.
