Academic integrity

Much of the work in this course is collaborative, but some parts require individual work. To understand when collaboration is appropriate read the web page on Academic Integrity and understand how it applies to this course.

Syllabus and schedule

The course schedule is posted on the Schedule page of this website. It lists the materials for each week and supplementary material about projects, tests, presentations, etc. Note that the schedule is subject to change as the course progresses.

For the first few weeks of the course, part of every class is used to help the formation of project teams.

The lecture classes end at spring break, so that teams can concentrate on their projects.

Lectures and other course materials

All course materials are available online. Each lecture has two versions:

  • The full version is available online for you to study in your own time. There is a video lecture and a PDF file with slides. See the Lectures page on the website.
  • A shortened version will be given in class, summarizing the main points of the full lecture with additional examples.

Projects

The groups projects are a central part of the course. See the Projects pages for more information.

  • Work on the projects is divided into four parts, each of which ends in a milestone. At each milestone, the team submits a written report.
  • After the second, third, and final milestones, the team also makes a presentation to the client and the course team.

For more information, see the Assignments page. Specific information about each of the assignments is given on the Assignments 1 to 4 page.

Tests

There are three tests that are based on the material covered in the video lectures. Each test has two questions. In calculating the final grade, the grades on the best four questions will be used (out of the total of six).

The times of the tests are fixed. If you miss a test, there is no opportunity to retake it. For more information, see the Tests page.

Surveys

With each of the four major assignments, there is a survey about the progress of your project. It is a required part of the course. See the Surveys page.

Grading

The final grade will be a weighted average of the three following components of the course:

  • Group project
  • Individual project contribution
  • Tests

To get a good final grade it is important to do well in the tests and to make a significant individual contribution to the project.
