CodeWarrior Pro 3 PC Installation
Here's how to install CodeWarrior Pro 3 on Windows 95/NT with enough options to support
Java and C/C++ programming for CS classes. If you want to install only Java, just ignore
directions dealing with C or C++.
CodeWarrior Pro 3 (for Windows only) requires that Internet Explorer 4 be installed to
support Java debugging. One doesn't have to install the "active desktop" update
with IE4, just the browser itself.
On NT machines, CodeWarrior and Explorer both require that NT Service Pack 3 be
installed first.
- Uninstall old Codewarrior versions. Completely uninstall any previous
version of CodeWarrior. (There's an installer/uninstaller program in CodeWarrior's folder,
or the add/remove programs control panel should work.) Leave Internet Explorer 4 in place
--it doesn't have to be uninstalled. If there are any CodeWarrior or Metrowerks folders
left around after the uninstall, it is a good idea to delete them.
- Install Internet Explorer. Install Internet Explorer 4 if not already
present. An appropriate installer is on the CodeWarrior Pro 3 Windows 95/NT Tools CD.
Insert the Tools CD. Then
- Click Explore CD (don't click the "launch setup" button)
- Double click Doc Viewers
- Double click Internet Explorer 4
- Double click Win95 or WinNT as appropriate
- Double click browser only
- Double click IE4setup and click yes, next, agree, finish, etc. in the various dialog
boxes that come up. If you get a dialog box asking if you want the windows desktop update,
click no (unless you want it). You may not get a dialog box about this.
That should install IE4 and may launch it with the active desktop interface. If you're
superstitious, you might want to restart windows at this point to be sure everything is
cleaned up.
Next, remove the active desktop stuff if it was installed and you don't want it
(strongly suggested). An easy way to tell if the active desktop is installed is to double
click on the "My Computer" icon at the upper-left corner of the screen. If this
launches Internet Explorer, you've got it; if you get the regular Windows view of the
computer, you're safe. (The CodeWarrior IE4 installers seem to install the active desktop
on Windows 95, but not on Windows NT). To get rid of the active desktop stuff if it's
there:
- open the add/remove programs control panel
- select Internet Explorer 4.0
- select the "remove windows desktop update component but keep Internet Explorer 4.0
as the web browser" option. Click OK.
When the uninstall is done, restart windows. Remnents of the IE4 desktop interface may
still appear. Close them after selecting any "don't open this automatically
again" options that are present.
- Install CodeWarrior. Insert the CW Pro 3 Windows 95/NT Tools CD and
launch setup. Click yes/next/ok/etc. until the Installation Type window appears. Select
Custom and click next until you get to the Choose Options window.
The Pro 3 installer
has one scrollable list of the major options. If one of these has sub-options, the
Choices... button on the options dialog is enabled. Select Choices... to open another
window with the suboptions. Although it isn't entirely obvious, these are scrollable
lists, and you'll need to scroll down to find all the possibilities.
Here are the options and sub-options to select:
- Core DLL's
- IDE
- Headers & Libraries: Select only the following
- Java Libraries
- Win32 Libraries
- MSL C - x86
- MSL C++ - x86
- Languages: Only the following
- Windows Project Stationery: Select only the following
- C Console App
- C++ Console App
- Win32 C-C++ App
- Win SIOUX C-C++ App
- Java Project Stationery (no subchoices here)
Click ok/next/yes/finish until the installation begins. This will use up about 125MB
disk space. Restart the machine if requested.
- Install Sun's Java Environment (if a current version is not already
installed). CodeWarrior includes some tools that require at least the runtime part of
Sun's Java environment, and the CodeWarrior installer should display a dialog box to
remind you of this. After you get this reminder, let the CW installer finish.
If an
older version of the Sun Java environment exists, delete it now.
Open a viewer window and look at the files on the CD. Open the folder \Extras\Sun
Microsystems. Double click the jre115-Win32(1).exe icon to install the Java runtime
environment. If there's room, or if someone else wants it, install the full Sun Java
development kit by running jdk115-Win32.exe. If the full jdk is installed, don't run the
jre installer.
- Save space. You can save a few MB disk space by removing the following
from the CodeWarrior\ folder:
- CodeWarrior Books
- CodeWarrior Documentation
- Resources
- Install updates. Metrowerks has a few updates for CodeWarrior Pro 3.
Get on the Web and look at the Metrowerks web site, www.metrowerks.com. It contains
instructions for installing the updates. You need the CW IDE 3.1 patch. Install it by
double-clicking the update program. It will find the IDE and make the necessary updates
after you run the installer and tell it to go ahead. When the update finishes, open the
Metrowerks CodeWarrior folder and delete the IDE 3.0 file.
- Install CUCS Java stationery (optional). The files for the stationery CS
Java Application and CS Java Graphics Application can be downloaded from the
CS100A home page. Browse to that page and follow the directions. The downloaded files are
in standard formats for the web: a self-extracting BinHex archive for the Mac and a ip
file for Windows. Instructions for installing the stationary are included with the files.
