12/10 – The solution to HW 11 is now posted. Yes, the final is cumulative.
12/1 –
Solution to HW 10 is now posted.
The policy of “Absolutely no calculators, notes, books or any other auxiliary items are allowed” applies to the final as well.
11/22 – As it turns out that HW 11 is the last one I extended its deadline to next Friday 12/1 but I also added 3 problems to the “mandatory” part as well as a bonus problem. Some of the problems were renumbered in the process though none were dropped. The updated assignment file is hw11u.pdf and it includes a clarification of (old) problem 13 (new 16).
11/17 – HW 11 is now posted note that it is due Monday 11/27.
11/13 – The solution to prelim 2 is now loaded. The prelim problems were graded as follows:
1 - Ravi
2 - Cherie and others
3 - Eric
4 - Tanya
5 - Eric
6 - Cherie
7 - Niranjan
8 - Me and others
9 - Steve
10 - Zach
11/11 – The updated and complete version of HW 10 is now posted. Note that some of the previous version problems were renumbered but none were dropped.
11/7 – The solution of HW9 is now available.
11/3 –
Prelim:
Absolutely no calculators, notes, books or any other auxiliary items are allowed!
Material covered: structural induction, recursive algorithms, number theory, combinatorics up to and including today's class.
The solution of HW8 as well as HW 10 are now available. Note that the due date for HW 10 is 11/17 but there will be more problems added next Friday.
10/30 – The second prelim is now set for Wednesday 11/8 in class.
10/27 – HW 9 is now available.
10/25 – The solution to HW 7 is now available.
10/23 – The office hour of Eric Frackleton had to be changed to Tuesday 10:15-11:15AM.
10/20 –
The solution to HW 6 is now available as is HW 8.
The prelim has to be rescheduled as an in class exam for either Wednesday 11/8th or Friday 11/10th. If you have a major issue with either one of these dates please let me know.
10/13 –
There has been a slight change in the HW (not prelim) regrade policy: if you are not satisfied talking to the TA who graded your problem then you can talk either to me or to Niranjan (as opposed to talk to any other TA).
HW 7 is now available.
10/11 –
If you need to see me before Friday's drop course deadline then feel free to stop by my office or better still email me for an appointment.
Steve's office hour this Thursday is cancelled.
Niranjan's office hour today is postponed to 12-1pm tomorrow.
If you feel your work was graded unfairly then you should first talk (sooner rather then later) to the person who graded that problem (see below). If you feel that did not solve the problem then you should come to see me (unless I was the original grader...). The prelim problems were graded as follows:
Niranjan 1,7
Ravi 2,3,6
Steve 4,5
Me 8
10/10 – The prelim's grades are now loaded into CMS as are a solution and the grades histograms (look for it all under the Prelim 1 assignment).
10/6 – The updated HW 6 is now available. You should be working on a version whose title clearly states “updated version” and has 15+1 problems. All the problems of the original assignment are present in the updated version though a couple had their numbers changed. Enjoy your break!
10/4 –
Important announcement: due to popular request the due date for HW 6 has been delayed to next Friday, 10/13. I will however add a few problems to this assignment. Watch for the announcement of the availability of the augmented assignment.
There was a slight omission in Monday's class notes which was now fixed (proving that for a WFF l(E)=r(E) – thanks to Chris Leary for pointing this out).
Cherie's office hour for tomorrow 10/5 had to be cancelled but Niranjan volunteered to have an extra office hour at that time slot.
10/3 – The solution to HW 5 is available.
9/29 – HW 6 is now available. The solution to HW 4 is also available.
9/22 – HW 5 is now available. The solution to HW 3 is also available. Please note the following change in regrades policy: you are allowed to appeal your grade within two weeks of the date the solution is posted (which will occur after the assignments are handed back in class).
9/18 – The solution to HW 2 was updated to include the identity of the grader of each problem. The first Prelim will be in class on Friday 10/6. Class notes updated.
9/15 – HW 4 is now available under CMS.
9/14 – We have two additional TAs assigned. Please note their office hours.
9/13 – The first prelim will take place in class either on 10/4 or on 10/6. If you have a major issue with either one of these dates please let me know by the end of this week.
9/12 – Please note that appeals will only be considered within the first two weeks after you receive your graded assignment (3 weeks for the first assignment only).
9/11 – A solution for the second assignment is now available through CMS. The class notes have been updated as well.
9/8 – HW 3 is now available under CMS. Points will be taken off assignments that are handed at the end of the class on Friday. The lecture notes section has been updated as well.
9/7 – Solution for the first assignment is now available through CMS.
9/6 – Problem 15 (b) the page number should be 30 (not 29 as originally typed).
9/5 – For those of you who have yet to pick up their first HW assignment it is available at 360 Upson Hall (located down the corridor connecting to Rhodes Hall). The hours of this office are Monday through Friday, 10am - 12pm and 2-4 PM.
9/4 –
Please attach a cover sheet to your next assignment.
If you have a major issue with one of the suggested dates for the prelims please inform me by the end of this week.
If you want to appeal your grade for a problem in the HW assignment you must first talk to the TA who graded that particular problem. If you feel the issue was not resolved then you can talk to Niranjan or me. The list of which TA graded which question will accompany the HW solution that will soon be available.
Unfortunately submission through CMS creates too much of a logistical problem to the graders therefore from now on submission is only allowed in class at the due date or if you want to submit earlier you can personally hand it to any one of the TAs or me.
Class notes have been updated.
9/2 – HW 2 is now available under CMS, look there also for all I know about the partial mapping between the editions. The lecture notes section has been updated with a thorough discussion of the p=>T example I gave in class. Feel free to skip this discussion if your goal is limited to surviving this course.
8/29 – Unfortunately there is no perfect mapping between the exercises in the 5th and the 6th editions of the book. See more under the announcements section in CMS.
8/28 – HW 1 is now available for download here. It is also available through CMS. Note that if you have an electronic file you can submit it in CMS as long as it is done before the deadline.
8/25 – The CMS link should now be working for most of you.

Textbook: Discrete Mathematics and Its Applications by Kenneth Rosen, 6th edition
The textbook has an associated website with considerable supplementary material
Newsgroup monitored by the course staff: group is cornell.class.cs280 and the server address is newsstand.cit.cornell.edu
A draft syllabus is available here. Deviations are expected but it does give the big picture.
CS 100 or equivalent is a prerequisite/corequisite for the course.
There will be two prelims during the semester
Prelim 1: Friday 10/6 in class
Prelim 2: Wednesday 11/8 in class
Final: Thursday 12/14 9:00-11:30am Phillips 101
There will be weekly homework sets, generally due on Fridays. Homework should be handed in class at 1:22 pm (three minutes before the class starts) on the day it is due.
Late homeworks will not receive credit. (If a genuine emergency situation prevents you from handing in an assignment on time, come talk to one of us and we can work something out.)
When computing your cumulative homework score your lowest graded assignment will be dropped
You are allowed to collaborate on the homework to the extent of formulating ideas as a group. However, you must write up the solutions to each problem set completely on your own. You must also list the names of everyone that you discussed the problem set with.
You should attach this cover sheet to your assignment and please make sure to fill in your NetID.
If you want to appeal your grade for any problem in the HW assignment you must first talk to the TA who graded that particular problem. If you feel the issue was not resolved then you should talk to Niranjan or me. Please note that appeals will only be considered within the first two weeks of the date the solution is posted (which will occur after the assignments are handed back in class).
Assignments that are not picked up during the class they are returned are available at 360 Upson Hall (located down the corridor connecting to Rhodes Hall). The hours of this office are Monday through Friday, 10am - 12pm and 2-4 PM.
The overall course grade will be determined approximately as follows: 20% based on each prelim, 30% based on the final exam, and 30% based on the cumulative homework score.
You are expected to maintain the utmost level of academic integrity in the course. Any violation of the code of academic integrity will be penalized severely.
You are allowed to collaborate on the homework to the extent of formulating ideas as a group. However, you must write up the solutions to each problem set completely on your own. You must also list the names of everyone that you discussed the problem set with.
